Many of us live a life that runs on two gears – fast and faster. Our schedules are meticulously planned, always asking for more, and rarely slow down. Sometimes we find ourselves so busy doing a number of things that it seems we don’t actually achieve or complete anything! What are we to do??
Balance is important in life. When life seems to be moving too fast, taking time to slow things down can be seriously helpful on more levels than we might realize.
When we take time to slow down, to re-balance, recharge, and reflect, we heal and balance ourselves not only physically, but also mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
The key is to slow down with purpose. If we pump the breaks with intention – the intention to refresh and renew – we can change our lives in amazing ways.
Here are four reasons to slow down right now:
1. When we slow down, our bodies can once again appreciate the balance between activity and stillness.
Our bodies do a lot. And that’s okay, they were made to! They’re strong – they were made to lift, run, sit, walk, climb, jump, stand, and rest. Anything in excess will eventually overflow, burn out, or collapse. While our bodies are amazing, they need the time to slow down, rest, and reset. Our bodies are smart and will also often speak to us if we give them the time and stillness to do so.
2. When we slow down, our minds become clearer, and we become more self-aware and socially aware.
If our bodies are working a million miles a minute, our minds might be working ten times as fast. A lot of us have trouble giving our minds the rest they need. There always seems to be something to remember, plan, think about, go over, re-live…the list goes on and on. Just like our bodies, our minds can become exhausted too.
Sleep is a wonderful thing and helps our minds recharge. It’s important for us, however, to make sure that we keep a check on our minds during our waking hours as well. Taking time to consciously slow down and let our minds relax has more benefits than one. We become more self-aware when we allow our minds to simply focus on ourselves in the present moment.
It can be scary and many of us don’t want to explore too intimately within. Finding the courage to do so, however, can change your life for the better.
Slowing down mentally can also help us become more socially and externally aware. To gain a greater understanding of others, you must start with yourself first.
3. When we slow down, our emotions calm and we reconnect with the peace often lost in the rush of everyday life.
There’s no denying the importance of peace. Life can be hectic and there are no substitutions or shortcuts for taking even a moment or two to stop, take a few deep breaths, and relax.
4. When we slow down, our intuition can be heard again.
We reconnect with the truth within us and regain the connection we have with our bodies, minds, and emotions that only we can feel from within.
Slowing down and reconnecting spiritually, on top of the physical, mental, and emotionally benefits of slowing down can really inspire total change. There are changes on the outside that others might notice when we start slowing down, but the change that occurs on the inside, at a spiritual level, is the one that can serve as an important foundation for the rest of the changes. It is here that we can take the time to reassess our values and beliefs, our aspirations and hopes.
So there you are, four reasons to slow down this very moment. You don’t have to take them all on at once. You don’t even need to work your way through them in the same day or week. Listen to yourself inside and out and you’ll know where you need to slow down, take a rest, and reconnect.
